About the author

Born in 1815, John B. Wyeth is remembered for Oregon; or, A Short History of a Long Journey, a travel narrative based on his experience with the 1832 expedition led by Nathaniel J. Wyeth. The work presents him as one of the party members who turned back before reaching the Pacific and returned to New England.

His book was printed in Cambridge in 1833 and was drawn from his notes and oral recollections. Later editions and library records also connect the work with Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse, indicating that the published text was prepared in collaboration with him.

For listeners interested in early American travel writing, Wyeth’s value lies in the immediacy of his account. Rather than a polished literary career, he left behind a vivid snapshot of westward travel at a moment when Oregon was still, for many readers in the eastern United States, a distant and uncertain frontier.
