About the author

Born in Edinburgh on October 4, 1833, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh before turning toward zoology and anatomy. Early in his career he also taught natural history in Edinburgh, showing the mix of scholarship and field curiosity that would define the rest of his life.

He is best known for his years in India, where he became the first curator of the Indian Museum in Calcutta in 1865. During his time there, he carried out important collecting expeditions in Burma and China, and his research helped establish him as a respected scientific figure of his day.

His achievements brought him election to the Royal Society in 1879, along with recognition from other learned societies. He died in Buxton on August 15, 1900, leaving behind a body of zoological work closely tied to museum study, travel, and natural history.
