About the author

Born in Edinburgh in 1833, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh before moving into natural history. He became the first curator of the Indian Museum in Calcutta, a role that placed him at the center of scientific work in British India.

His career joined museum research with travel. He took part in major expeditions to Upper Burma and western China, and he published both scientific studies and travel writing, including accounts of the journeys and works on mammals and reptiles. He is especially remembered for his contributions to zoology in South Asia.

He died in 1900. Though trained as a doctor, his lasting reputation comes from the way he documented animal life, organized collections, and turned exploration into books that still give a sense of the natural world and imperial-era travel.
