About the author

Born in Virginia in 1827, John Albert Broadus became an American Baptist pastor, teacher, and influential preacher. He studied at the University of Virginia and went on to serve in ministry while also building a reputation for clear, powerful preaching.

Broadus was one of the founding faculty members of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and later served as its president. He is especially remembered for his work in homiletics, the study and practice of preaching, and for helping train generations of ministers.

He died in 1895, but his name remained closely linked with Baptist life, theological education, and preaching in the United States. Readers still encounter him today through his sermons, lectures, and books on New Testament interpretation and preaching.
