About the author

John A. Thompson is Emeritus Reader in American History at the University of Cambridge and an Emeritus Fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. He studied History at Christ’s College, Cambridge, graduated in 1962, and then pursued research in American history after a Harkness Fellowship in the United States.

Before joining Cambridge in 1971, he taught at University College London from 1966 to 1971. His published work centers on U.S. history, politics, and foreign policy, and includes Reformers and War: American Progressive Publicists and the First World War, Woodrow Wilson: A Profile in Power, and A Sense of Power: The Roots of America's Global Role.

His writing is known for taking big questions in American history and making them readable, especially for listeners interested in presidential leadership, diplomacy, and the long arc of U.S. influence in the world.
