About the author

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 2, 1880, he entered the Dominican Order in 1897 after studying at St. Xavier's Institute and St. Xavier's College. He was ordained in 1905, continued advanced studies in Rome and Fribourg, and went on to teach theology and philosophy in Washington, D.C., Maryknoll, and Hawthorne, New York.

Much of his reputation comes from his writing and editorial work. He contributed articles to the Catholic Encyclopedia, wrote several books on his own, and collaborated extensively with Charles J. Callan on widely used Catholic works including Blessed Be God, Moral Theology, and editions connected with the Catechism of the Council of Trent. From 1916 until his death, he also served as joint editor-in-chief of the Homiletic and Pastoral Review.

Later in life he served as pastor of Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne, New York. He was also involved in biblical scholarship, serving on the editorial board for a revision of the English Catholic Bible and as president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America from 1938 to 1939. He died on April 9, 1950, after a short illness.
