About the author

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1875, John Allyne Gade built an unusually wide-ranging career. He was trained as an architect and went on to serve as a U.S. naval officer and attaché, while also working in finance and public service.

Alongside those careers, he wrote books on European history, architecture, and travel. His titles include Cathedrals of Spain, Charles the Twelfth, King of Sweden, and a study of King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway, showing a lasting interest in Scandinavian and continental European subjects.

That mix of practical experience and historical curiosity gives his writing its character. Whether describing buildings, cities, or political figures, he wrote with the perspective of someone who had seen a great deal of the world for himself.
