About the author

Born in Farsø, Denmark, in 1873, Johannes V. Jensen became one of the country’s most important modern writers. He studied medicine for a time before turning fully to journalism and literature, and over the years he built a reputation for energetic, original writing across many forms.

Jensen is especially known for novels, poems, and essays that combined sharp observation with a deep interest in nature, history, and human development. Among his best-known works is the long historical-novel cycle The Long Journey, and in 1944 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He died in Copenhagen in 1950, but his influence remained strong in Danish letters. Readers often remember him for the scale of his imagination and for the way he brought together storytelling, science, and myth in a style that felt strikingly modern.
