About the author

Born in Farsø, Denmark, on January 20, 1873, he grew up in Himmerland, a landscape that later fed some of his best-known writing. He studied medicine in Copenhagen but left before graduating and turned instead to journalism and literature.

He wrote novels, poems, essays, and stories, and is widely regarded as one of the major Danish writers of the first half of the 20th century. Among his notable works are Himmerland Stories and The Long Journey, and the Nobel Prize recognized the strength of his imagination, wide-ranging curiosity, and bold style.

He died in Copenhagen on November 25, 1950. His writing is often remembered for bringing together local life, large historical themes, and an unusual interest in how humanity developed over time.
