About the author

Born in Oldenburg on May 4, 1776, Johann Friedrich Herbart was a German philosopher, psychologist, and educator who later taught at Göttingen and Königsberg. He is often remembered as one of the founders of pedagogy as an academic discipline, bringing philosophy and psychology into close conversation with the practical work of teaching.

Herbart wrote on ethics, metaphysics, psychology, and aesthetics, but his lasting reputation comes from education. He argued that instruction should be carefully structured and connected to the learner's developing ideas, and his approach inspired the educational movement known as Herbartianism.

Although he lived in the shadow of larger names in German philosophy, his influence reached far beyond his own lifetime. He died in Göttingen on August 14, 1841, and is still studied today for his role in shaping modern educational theory.
