About the author

Born in Stora Tuna in 1779, Johan Olof Wallin became one of Sweden’s most influential hymn writers as well as a respected poet, preacher, and church leader. He studied at Uppsala University, was ordained in 1806, and first gained wider attention through prizewinning poetry.

Wallin’s lasting reputation rests above all on his hymns. He played a major role in the Swedish hymn tradition, and many readers remember him for the clarity, dignity, and musical quality of his religious verse. Alongside his literary work, he built an important clerical career and became known as an eloquent speaker.

In 1837 he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala, the senior office in the Church of Sweden, and he held that post until his death in 1839. His work sits at the meeting point of literature and devotion, which helps explain why he remains a notable figure in Swedish cultural and religious history.
