About the author

Born in Lisbon in 1806, Joaquim Possidónio Narciso da Silva became one of the notable Portuguese cultural figures of the 19th century. He is remembered as an architect, archaeologist, and photographer, with a career that moved easily between building design and the study of older monuments.

He worked for the Portuguese royal family and was involved with the Palácio da Ajuda, but his importance reaches beyond court architecture. In 1863, he founded the association that would become the Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses, an important step in organizing the protection and study of Portugal’s architectural and archaeological heritage.

Possidónio da Silva also played a key role in the creation of the museum at the Carmo site in Lisbon, helping establish one of the country’s earliest spaces devoted to art and archaeology. He died in 1896, leaving behind a legacy tied not only to buildings, but also to the idea that a nation’s history should be carefully preserved and shared.
