About the author
Born in Setúbal on March 9, 1859, João José Vaz studied at Lisbon's Royal Academy of Fine Arts and built a strong reputation as a painter and decorator. He became especially admired for maritime subjects, making the sea, beaches, and working waterfronts central to his art.
His career gained further visibility after recognition at exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, and he later taught decorative painting at the Industrial School Afonso Domingues in Lisbon. That teaching role made him an important link between studio practice and arts education.
Remembered today above all for his marine painting, he captured Portugal's coastline with energy and precision. He died in Lisbon on February 17, 1931, leaving behind a body of work closely tied to the country's visual memory of the sea.
