About the author

João Vaz was a Portuguese painter born in Setúbal in 1859 and active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied art in Lisbon and became especially known for painting the sea, beaches, ships, and coastal light with a natural, direct style.

Over the course of his career, he traveled and worked in Portugal and abroad, including time connected with artistic circles in France. He later taught drawing and painting, and his reputation grew strongly around marine subjects, making him one of the Portuguese artists most associated with seascapes of his period.

He died in 1931, but his name remains closely linked with Portuguese naturalist painting. For listeners who enjoy writers and artists shaped by place, atmosphere, and observation, his story is a reminder of how deeply the Atlantic world influenced Portuguese culture.
