by João Pereira Franco Monteiro
Franco Monteiro was a Portuguese writer best known as a journalist, city councilor, and historian. He is commonly referred to as João Franco Monteiro, while library and book records also list him as João Pereira Franco Monteiro.
He is associated above all with As donatarias d'Alemquer, a work first published in 1893. In it, he explored the history of the queens of Portugal and their household and estates, showing a clear fascination with genealogy, court life, and the historical role of noblewomen.
Although not a widely documented figure today, the surviving records point to an author deeply engaged with Portuguese history and local civic life. That mix of public service, journalism, and historical research gives his writing a grounded, curious quality that still feels distinctive.
