About the author

Born on March 8, 1830, in São Bartolomeu de Messines in Portugal’s Algarve region, João de Deus de Nogueira Ramos became one of the best-known Portuguese writers of his time. He studied law at the University of Coimbra, but literature drew him more strongly, and his poems earned attention for their simplicity, tenderness, and emotional directness.

He is especially remembered as a lyric poet of Portuguese Romanticism. Critics have noted the natural, expressive language of his verse, and his work went on to influence later Portuguese literature. Alongside poetry, he also worked as a journalist and editor.

Later in life, he turned much of his energy toward education. His Cartilha Maternal (1876), a widely used reading primer, became one of his most lasting achievements and was used to teach Portuguese across the country for many years. He died in Lisbon on January 11, 1896.
