About the author

Born in São Bartolomeu de Messines, in Portugal's Algarve, João de Deus de Nogueira Ramos studied law at the University of Coimbra but became known above all for poetry. His verse earned lasting admiration for its simplicity, warmth, and clarity, and he came to be regarded as one of the leading Portuguese lyric poets of his time.

Alongside his literary work, he turned seriously to education. His Cartilha Maternal (1876) became one of the best-known methods for teaching reading in Portuguese and gave him an important place not just in literature, but in the history of schooling as well.

His work continued to be celebrated after his death in Lisbon in 1896, and his reputation rests on both sides of his career: the poet who wrote with unusual tenderness and directness, and the educator who tried to make reading more accessible.
