Joan Echols

Born in Ohio in 1932, Betty Joan Echols studied geology at Ohio State University and the University of Texas, then continued postgraduate research at the University of Kansas and Harvard University. In 1964, she joined the Earth Science Department at East Texas State University, where she taught for many years and became closely associated with the university's geology and paleontology work.

Her research focused on fossils and ancient life, and she published studies including work on a new genus of Pennsylvanian fish from Kansas. University archive records also show that she played an important role in building teaching and research collections connected with East Texas State, preserving specimens and professional materials that continued to support study after her retirement.

She died in Commerce, Texas, on February 22, 2013, at age 81. The picture that emerges from the university archives and obituary notices is of a dedicated scientist and professor whose career linked fieldwork, scholarship, and teaching.
