About the author

Born in Aix-en-Provence on March 31, 1873, Joachim Gasquet was a French author, poet, and art critic. He moved in literary and artistic circles in Provence and Paris, and his writing reflects a strong connection to the cultural life of his era.

He is best known today for his writings about artists, especially Paul Cézanne, whom he knew personally. Gasquet's accounts helped shape how later readers understood Cézanne, not just as a painter but as a voice and presence within modern art.

Gasquet died in Paris on May 6, 1921. Though less widely read now than some of the artists he wrote about, he remains an important witness to the artistic life of his generation.
