jin shi 886 E Su

Little is firmly known about Su E (also written Su O or Su Ngo in older romanizations). Chinese reference sources identify him as a writer from Wugong in Jingzhao during the Tang dynasty, and note that he earned the jinshi degree in 886, during the reign of Emperor Xizong.

He is best known as the author of Duyang zabian (usually translated as Miscellaneous Records of Duyang), a short collection of anecdotal writing. The book is valued for its colorful stories about court life, unusual objects, and marvel-filled episodes connected with the Tang world.

Because so few biographical details survive, Su E is remembered less as a public figure than through the atmosphere of his writing. For modern readers, his work preserves a fragment of late Tang literary culture: curious, vivid, and full of historical imagination.
