About the author

Born in 987 and dying in 1053, Liu Yong was a Chinese poet of the Northern Song dynasty. He is especially known for ci lyric poetry, a form he expanded in scope and tone, helping turn it into one of the great literary styles of his age.

His poems often focus on city life, longing, travel, romance, and the emotional world of courtesans and entertainers. That attention to ordinary feeling and lived experience gave his work a directness that set him apart from many more formal writers of his time.

Liu Yong’s influence lasted well beyond his lifetime. Later readers valued both his technical skill and his gift for writing lyrics that feel intimate, musical, and alive on the page.
