About the author

Jerónimo Osório da Fonseca (1506–20 August 1580) was a Portuguese Roman Catholic humanist, theologian, historian, and polemicist. Born in Lisbon, he was known for his command of Latin and his deep engagement with Greek and Roman authors. He later served as bishop of Silves in the Algarve.

His writings ranged across moral philosophy, Christian nobility, political advice, theology, and history. Among his best-known works are De nobilitate civili, De gloria, De regis institutione et disciplina, and De rebus Emmanuelis regis gestis, a history of the reign of King Manuel I.

Osório wrote in an elegant Latin style that earned him the reputation of the “Cicero of Portugal.” His work reflects the intellectual culture of sixteenth-century Portugal, where classical education, Catholic thought, royal politics, and the country’s expanding imperial history were closely intertwined.
