About the author

Raised in Tucson, Jefferson Carter studied at Pomona College and later earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Arizona. He went on to teach at Pima Community College for thirty years, including eighteen years as chair of the Writing Department.

His poems have appeared in journals including Carolina Quarterly, Barrow Street, Cream City Review, Rattle, and New Poets of the American West. His chapbook Tough Love won the Riverstone Press Poetry Chapbook Award.

Carter has published multiple poetry collections, including Get Serious: New and Selected Poems, which was chosen as a Southwest Best Book of 2013, and Free Hugs. He has also given readings at the University of Arizona Poetry Center, Pima Community College, and venues across Arizona and beyond.
