About the author

Jefferson Carter is an American poet based in Tucson, Arizona. He taught writing at Pima Community College for many years, and his poems have appeared in journals including Carolina Quarterly, Barrow Street, Cream City Review, Rattle, and New Poets of the American West.

Over a long career, he has published numerous poetry collections, including Get Serious: New and Selected Poems, My Kind of Animal, Diphtheria Festival, Birkenstock Blues, Yesternow, and Free Hugs. Get Serious was recognized as a Southwest Best Book of 2013 by the Tucson/Pima County Public Library, and his chapbook Tough Love won the Riverstone Press Poetry Chapbook Award.

His writing is often described as clear, accessible, and funny, with an eye for the unexpected turn of phrase. Alongside his literary work, he has also been active in environmental volunteering in southern Arizona.
