by Jean Martet
Born in Angers on December 31, 1886, Jean Martet was a French poet, dramatist, and novelist. He studied in Paris and went on to build a literary career that included fiction, poetry, and plays.
Martet is especially known for serving as Georges Clemenceau's secretary from 1915 and later as head of his secretariat. That unusually close view of a major political figure fed into books connected with Clemenceau's life and ideas, alongside Martet's own novels.
He died in Paris on February 13, 1940. Though not widely known today, his career stands out for the way it joined literary work with firsthand experience of French public life.
