About the author

Born in Tarbes in 1833, Jean M. Pérez was a French zoologist who spent much of his career at the University of Bordeaux, where he became a professor of zoology. He is especially associated with the study of Hymenoptera, the insect order that includes bees, wasps, and ants.

His best-known work is Les abeilles (1889), a book that helped introduce readers to the behavior, social organization, and natural history of bees. He also published research on queen bees and reproduction, and his scientific work connected him with other important French naturalists of the period, including Jean-Henri Fabre.

Pérez died in 1914. Today he is remembered both as a specialist in insect life and as a writer who helped open up the study of bees to a wider audience.
