About the author

Born Jeanne Marie Bernarde Alleman in Bordeaux on March 14, 1885, this French writer published under the pen name Jean Balde. She chose that name as a tribute to her grand-uncle Jean-François Bladé, and she used it for all of her literary work.

She became known as both a novelist and a literary critic. Her writing is often linked to Bordeaux and the wider southwest of France, and she published works including Âmes d’artistes, Mausolées, heures de guerre, and Reine d’Arbieux. She was also recognized by the Académie française during her career.

Jean Balde died in Latresne in 1938. Though less widely read today than some of her contemporaries, she remains a distinctive voice in early 20th-century French literature, especially for readers drawn to regional fiction and finely observed character portraits.
