About the author

Born on April 1, 1814, in Nagykapos and educated at the Protestant College of Sárospatak, János Erdélyi became an important figure in Hungarian literature as a poet, critic, author, philosopher, and ethnographer. After moving to Pest, he joined the center of literary life and was elected to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences while still a young man.

He is especially remembered for his deep interest in Hungarian folk culture. Through his collecting and editing work, he helped preserve songs, tales, and proverbs, treating folk tradition as something central to national literature rather than a curiosity at the margins. That made him an important bridge between everyday oral culture and the written world of books and criticism.

Alongside this, he wrote poetry and literary criticism and played a visible role in the Kisfaludy Society. His career shows a rare mix of creative writing, scholarship, and cultural preservation, and his legacy rests on all three.
