About the author

Born on March 2, 1817, in Nagyszalonta, János Arany became one of the most important poets in Hungarian literature. He worked in several roles over the years, including teacher, actor, notary, editor, journalist, and later secretary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

His breakthrough came with Toldi, published in 1847, an epic poem that won wide praise and established him as a major literary voice. He later expanded that world into the Toldi trilogy, and he was also celebrated for his ballads, which earned him a lasting reputation for narrative skill, dramatic tension, and memorable language.

Arany also translated major works into Hungarian, including Shakespeare, and his poetry is often noted for balancing national themes with a deeply human sense of loss, dignity, and wit. He died on October 22, 1882, in Budapest, but his work remains a cornerstone of Hungarian culture.
