About the author

Born in 1800, she was one of the Strickland siblings, a family in which many of the children became authors. She was the daughter of Thomas Strickland and Elizabeth Homer Strickland, and her sisters included well-known writers such as Agnes Strickland and Susanna Moodie.

She wrote in several forms, including books for children, historical writing, and fiction. Works associated with her include Rome, Regal and Republican, Adonijah: A Tale of the Jewish Dispersion, and Life of Agnes Strickland, published late in her life. Accounts of her life suggest that poor health and family responsibilities limited her public career, but she continued to contribute to the literary life of her family.

She died in 1888. Though she is less famous than some of her sisters, she remains part of an unusually rich literary household and is remembered for writing that brought history and biography to younger and general readers.
