by James Walter Sandilands, Norman MacLeod
Born in 1874, James Walter Sandilands served as a British Army officer and later reached the rank of major-general. His military career included service in the Mahdist War, the Second Boer War, and the First World War, and he went on to serve as Commander of British Troops in South China.
Alongside Norman MacLeod, he wrote The History of the 7th Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, first published in 1922. The book is still noted as a substantial regimental history, reflecting both careful record-keeping and firsthand understanding of army life.
Sandilands died in 1959. Today, he is best known to many readers through that historical work, which preserves the experience and identity of a Highland regiment across wartime service.
