About the author

Born in Crieff, Scotland, in 1848, James Stalker became a Presbyterian minister, teacher, and widely read devotional writer. He studied at New College, Edinburgh, and served as pastor at St. Brycedale in Kirkcaldy before going on to academic work.

Stalker later taught church history and Christian ethics at New College, Edinburgh. Alongside his preaching and teaching, he wrote many books that aimed to make faith vivid and accessible, including well-known studies of Jesus, Paul, and other biblical figures.

His work is remembered for its warmth, clarity, and practical spiritual focus. Writing for ordinary readers as well as students, he helped shape popular Christian reading in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and he died in 1927.
