About the author

Born in Crieff, Scotland, in 1848, James Stalker became a minister, scholar, and religious writer in the Free Church tradition. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and was widely recognized for his gifts as a preacher and lecturer.

He served as a pastor before moving into theological education, eventually becoming professor of church history at the United Free Church College in Aberdeen, where he taught for more than two decades. He also became well known in Britain and America as a speaker whose sermons and lectures combined learning with a direct, accessible style.

Stalker is remembered today mainly through his books, especially The Life of Jesus Christ and The Life of St. Paul. His work aimed to make Christian history and Scripture vivid for ordinary readers, which helps explain why his books continued to circulate long after his death in 1927.
