James R. Hall was an American writer known for nonfiction that combined careful research with an accessible style. He worked as a journalist for the Shelbyville News from 1979 to 1992, later became a feature writer for the Indianapolis Star from 1995 to 1999, and also wrote freelance pieces for publications including the Saturday Evening Post and Civil War Times Illustrated.

He is best known for Den of Misery: Indiana’s Civil War Prison, a book about Camp Morton in Indianapolis that examines a difficult and often neglected part of Civil War history. Publisher and bookseller biographies also describe him as a pastoral counselor, suggesting the mix of empathy and seriousness that shaped his writing.

Hall lived in Shelbyville, Indiana, with his wife, a son, and their dachshunds, Maxie and Sammy. He passed away in August 2013.
