About the author

Born in Philadelphia in August 1767, James Peller Malcolm grew up partly in Pennsylvania before returning to Philadelphia after the American Revolutionary War. He later moved to England around 1789, studied art, and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1791. Though trained as an engraver and artist, he also became known as an antiquarian writer with a strong interest in the history of London.

His best-known book is Londinium Redivivum (1802–1807), a major illustrated work on the history and description of London drawn from parish records, archives, and other sources. He also wrote works on London’s manners and customs, combining documentary research with scenes and details that helped readers picture the city’s past.

Malcolm died in London on April 5, 1815. No clear portrait image of him was confirmed from the sources reviewed, so none is included here.
