About the author

Born in 1842, James O'Brien was a British horticulturist and botanist best known for his expertise in orchids. He worked as orchid and plant foreman for R. S. Holford at Westonbirt, later became general foreman to E. G. Henderson and Son, and built a strong reputation as a practical authority on orchid cultivation.

He served as Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society's Orchid Committee from 1889 to 1923, a role that placed him at the center of orchid judging and classification during a major period in the plant's popularity. He was also associated with The Gardeners' Chronicle and assisted the botanist H. G. Reichenbach.

For audiobook listeners, he is especially known as the author of Orchids, a concise, instructive book that explains the structure, care, and cultivation of these remarkable plants in a direct and approachable way. He died in 1930, and his writing still reflects the enthusiasm and hands-on experience of a lifelong grower.
