About the author

Born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1827, James J. H. Gregory became one of the best-known American seed growers of his time. He founded a seed business in the mid-19th century and earned a lasting reputation for developing and promoting improved varieties of vegetables, especially squash, onions, and cabbages.

Gregory also wrote extensively for gardeners and farmers. His books and seed catalogs were valued not just for selling seeds, but for sharing clear, practical advice about cultivation, selection, and harvest. That mix of hands-on experience and plainspoken instruction helped make his work widely useful to ordinary growers.

He died in 1910, but his influence continued through both horticulture and agricultural writing. Today he is remembered as an important figure in American gardening history, especially for helping turn seed catalogs into a trusted source of everyday growing knowledge.
