Born in Mountmellick, Ireland, in 1847, James Jeffrey Roche was taken as a young child to Prince Edward Island, where he was educated before moving to Boston in 1866. He built an unusual career as a poet, journalist, and editor, becoming closely associated with the Boston Pilot, an influential Irish Catholic newspaper.

Roche joined the Pilot staff in the 1880s and later became editor-in-chief. He was known as a sharp, energetic writer and as an important public voice among Irish-American and Catholic readers in New England. Alongside his journalism, he published poetry and prose, including works of humor, history, and biography.

Later in life, he also served as a U.S. diplomat in Switzerland. He died in 1908, leaving behind a body of writing that reflects both literary ambition and a strong engagement with the civic and cultural life of his time.
