About the author

Born in 1854, James Harwood Panting was a British author and editor who became especially known for boys' school stories. He also worked as editor of Young Folks and served on the editorial staff of the South London Press.

Panting wrote in a brisk, accessible style that suited popular magazines and youthful readers. Alongside school fiction, he also wrote under the pen name Claud Heathcote, and his work appeared in periodicals of the time.

He died in 1924. Today he is remembered chiefly for adventure-filled school tales such as The Hero of Garside School, which still give modern readers a clear sense of the energy and values of popular fiction from his era.
