About the author

Born in Paisley in 1814, he was the son of William Hamilton, a Church of Scotland minister and religious writer. He studied at Glasgow and Edinburgh, entered the ministry, and went on to serve congregations in London. Alongside his pastoral work, he built a strong reputation as a prolific author of devotional and evangelical literature.

His writing was known for its warmth, clarity, and earnest tone. Rather than aiming at specialists, he wrote for ordinary readers, and many of his books and tracts were designed to encourage practical faith, steady character, and serious reflection.

Hamilton died in 1867, but his work continued to circulate well after his lifetime. He is still remembered both as a preacher and as a 19th-century religious author whose accessible style helped him reach a broad audience.
