About the author

Born in Hookstown, Pennsylvania, in 1852, he studied at Washington and Jefferson College and then at Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. Early in his career he served Presbyterian churches in Huron, Ohio, Sharon, Pennsylvania, and Washington, Pennsylvania.

He later became known as an editor, author, and teacher. Sources identify him with The Presbyterian Banner in Pittsburgh, and by the 1910s he was serving as Professor of Systematic Theology at Western Theological Seminary, where his published work explored subjects such as metaphysics, doubt, evolution and religion, and Christian belief.

He died in Pittsburgh in 1936. The surviving record suggests a long career centered in the Presbyterian intellectual life of western Pennsylvania, with writing that aimed to make complex religious ideas readable for a broad audience.
