About the author

Born in Bethesda, Wales, in 1857, he was educated at Winchester and Christ Church, Oxford, and later trained as a barrister. Alongside his legal work, he built a strong reputation in journalism and became known as a versatile writer with interests that ranged from politics and biography to travel and social observation.

He worked on several newspapers and magazines, including The National Observer, and wrote for major London papers. His books included studies of public figures, political subjects, and travel, showing an ability to write clearly for a broad audience rather than a narrow specialist one.

He died in 1909, still comparatively young, but left behind a body of work that reflects the public debates and changing pace of his time. For listeners interested in late 19th-century and early 20th-century nonfiction, his writing offers both period detail and an engaging journalistic voice.
