About the author

Born in 1857, James Edmund Vincent was an English journalist, author, and Liberal politician. He was educated at Westminster School and worked in journalism before serving as a member of Parliament for Central Sheffield from 1892 to 1895. Alongside politics, he built a substantial writing career that ranged across travel, biography, current affairs, and social observation.

Vincent wrote for major newspapers and magazines, and his books often drew on public questions and places he knew well. Titles associated with him include works on country life, politics, and travel, showing a writer interested in both everyday society and the wider world. That mix of reporter, commentator, and public figure gives his work much of its period charm.

He died in 1909, leaving behind a body of writing shaped by the concerns and curiosities of late 19th- and early 20th-century Britain. For listeners today, he offers more than historical detail: he brings the voice of someone who watched his age closely and wrote about it for a broad general audience.
