About the author

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, James E. Gunn was an American science fiction writer, editor, scholar, and anthologist whose career stretched across much of the genre’s modern history. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he studied at the University of Kansas, where he later taught for many years and became a central figure in science fiction studies.

Alongside novels and short fiction, he became especially well known for his critical and editorial work. He edited the influential Road to Science Fiction anthology series and won a Hugo Award for his book on Isaac Asimov. His long connection to the University of Kansas also led to the founding of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction, helping make him one of the field’s most important mentors and champions.

He was honored with the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and he remained active in the genre well into later life. For many readers, writers, and students, his legacy is not only in the stories he wrote, but in the way he helped science fiction take itself seriously as both literature and scholarship.
