About the author

Born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1915, James D. Bales went on to study at Harding College, George Peabody College, and the University of California, Berkeley. He returned to Harding and spent roughly four decades there as a professor of Bible and theology, also serving in administrative roles.

Bales built a national reputation as a forceful debater and prolific religious writer. Sources describe him as an influential and often controversial figure within the Churches of Christ, especially known for defending conservative positions and for his outspoken anti-communism.

He died in Searcy, Arkansas, in 1995. Today, he is remembered both for his long career at Harding University and for the many papers, books, and debates that preserved his voice in American religious life.
