About the author

Born in Aberdeen in 1813, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, taking his B.A. in 1834 and his M.A. in 1838. He went on to serve as vicar of Bekesbourne near Canterbury, later became a canon of Canterbury Cathedral, and from 1864 to 1874 taught ecclesiastical history at King's College London.

His reputation rests mainly on his historical writing. Alongside biographies and editorial work, he produced the substantial History of the Christian Church, a work that helped make him known as a careful scholar of church history.

He died at Canterbury on July 9, 1882. The surviving sources found here confirm his clerical posts and major publications, but they do not clearly provide a suitable verified portrait image.
