About the author

Born in Nastola in 1890 and dying in Oulu in 1936, Jalmari Kara was a Finnish writer as well as a trained engineer and Jäger captain. Finnish reference sources describe him as becoming better known for his writing than for his military career, even though his service background strongly shaped his public image and much of his work.

Kara wrote novels, memoir-like prose, and shorter fiction in the 1910s through the 1930s. He is especially associated with books connected to the Jäger movement and the years around World War I and Finnish independence, including Jääkärin muistelmia and Jääkärien jäljiltä. He also published under the pen names Eero Kaski and Kapteeni Teräs.

His writing stands out for bringing personal experience, patriotism, and adventure together in an accessible way. That mix helped make him a recognizable literary figure in his time, particularly for readers interested in war memories, national history, and dramatic popular fiction.
