About the author

Born in Kokkola on December 4, 1755, Jakob Tengström studied at the Royal Academy of Turku and later became a professor of theology there. He went on to serve as Bishop of Turku, and in 1817 became the first Archbishop of Turku and Finland.

He lived through a time of major political change, when Finland moved from Swedish to Russian rule. Historians often note him as an important church leader and public figure in that transition, as well as a scholar with a strong role in university and religious life.

Tengström died in Turku on December 26, 1832. He is remembered as one of the central builders of early nineteenth-century Finnish ecclesiastical life and as a prominent voice in the country's educated circles.
