Born into slavery in South Carolina and later becoming a minister in Massachusetts, he turned his life story into a powerful memoir. His writing gives readers a direct, deeply human view of enslavement, emancipation, and rebuilding a life after the Civil War.

by Jacob Stroyer
Jacob Stroyer was an American author and preacher best known for My Life in the South, a memoir drawn from his experiences of slavery and freedom. He was born in South Carolina in 1849, lived in slavery as a child, and later built a new life in the years after emancipation.
After the Civil War, Stroyer pursued education and eventually became a minister in Massachusetts. He served for many years in Salem, where he was known as a preacher and speaker as well as a writer.
His memoir remains important because it offers a personal account of slavery from someone who lived through it and chose to tell that story clearly and directly. For many readers, his work stands out not only as history, but as a record of endurance, faith, and self-determination.
