About the author

Born in LaPorte, Indiana, in 1861, he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1882 and continued his studies at Harvard and the University of Freiburg. After several years as an instructor and assistant in zoology, he joined the University of Michigan faculty and built a long academic career there as a professor of zoology.

His work centered on zoology, comparative anatomy, and the habits of fishes. He was closely connected with research in Michigan lakes and streams and is especially remembered by many readers for Anatomy of the Cat, written with H. S. Jennings, a textbook valued for its clear, hands-on treatment of mammalian structure.

Reighard died in 1942. Today he is remembered as both a researcher and an educator whose books helped make detailed biological study more approachable for students.
