About the author

Educated at Eton and King’s College, Cambridge, he became known as an English scholar and mythographer with a deep interest in classical learning, ancient religions, and early history.

He is especially remembered for A New System; or, an Analysis of Antient Mythology, a large and wide-ranging work that tried to trace myths and nations back to common ancient sources. He also wrote on Homer, Troy, biblical questions, and other historical subjects, often arguing for bold interpretations that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

Although some of his conclusions did not last, his writing gives a vivid picture of the scholarly imagination of the late 18th century. He remains an interesting figure for readers drawn to the history of ideas, antiquarian research, and the strange borderland between classical scholarship and mythmaking.
