Born in San Francisco in 1916, Jack Vance wrote science fiction, fantasy, and mystery across a long career, publishing most of his work under the name Jack Vance and some mysteries under other names, including John Holbrook Vance and Ellery Queen. He is especially remembered for richly imagined settings and elegant, ironic prose.
Many readers first meet him through major series and novels such as the Dying Earth books, the Demon Princes sequence, and The Lyonesse Trilogy. His influence spread widely in fantasy and science fiction, and he received major honors including recognition as a Grand Master in the field.
