About the author

Born on April 17, 1852, in Viljandi County, he began life far from literary circles and was educated first by his older brother. Largely self-taught, he qualified as a schoolmaster and worked in education before moving into journalism and public life during a period of growing Estonian national consciousness.

He became known as a prose writer and columnist, and his 1885 book Vallimäe neitsi is widely regarded as the first original Estonian novel. He also wrote other historical fiction, using stories from Estonia’s past to reach ordinary readers in clear, accessible language.

Alongside his literary work, he was active as a journalist and a participant in the national movement. He died in 1920, reportedly in the Ufa Governorate in Russia, leaving behind an important place in the early history of Estonian literature.
