About the author

Born on March 30, 1852, James Theodore Bent was an English explorer, archaeologist, and author. He studied at Repton and Wadham College, Oxford, and became known for travels that took him across the Aegean, the Middle East, and southern Africa.

Bent wrote a number of travel and research books drawn from these expeditions, including work on the Cyclades, southern Arabia, Ethiopia, and the ruins of Mashonaland. He often traveled with his wife, Mabel Bent, whose diaries and notes also became an important part of the record of their journeys.

He died in London on May 5, 1897, at just 45. Even so, his books helped shape how many late-Victorian readers imagined places that were little known to them, and they remain of interest today as records of exploration, archaeology, and travel writing.
