About the author

Born in 1852, James Theodore Bent became known for journeys that took him well beyond Britain, often working with his wife and travel partner, Mabel Bent. He explored and wrote about places including the Greek islands, southern Arabia, Ethiopia, and southern Africa, turning his expeditions into books that appealed to readers interested in archaeology, travel, and the wider world.

Bent was especially drawn to the link between landscapes, ruins, and local customs. Rather than writing only about monuments, he also recorded folklore, trade, and everyday life, which gives his work a broader human interest alongside its archaeological value.

He died in 1897 at just 44 years old, after years of demanding travel. Though some of his interpretations belong to his time, his writings still offer a vivid window into Victorian exploration and the early study of ancient cultures.
