J. T. (John Thomas) Barber

Born in London in December 1774, John Thomas Barber later became known as John Thomas Barber Beaumont after adding the name Beaumont in 1812. He first built a reputation as an artist, exhibiting historical and miniature paintings and winning recognition from institutions including the Royal Academy and the Society of Arts.

As an author, he is chiefly associated with A Tour Throughout Wales and Monmouthshire, published in 1803 after a journey through south Wales. The book combines travel writing with illustrations, and it remains the work most closely linked to his name as a writer.

Barber Beaumont's interests were unusually wide. He served as a volunteer officer during the Napoleonic era, became successful in insurance and savings enterprises, and later supported educational and philanthropic projects in London. He died in 1841, leaving behind a life that mixed art, public service, business, and authorship in a very distinctive way.
