About the author

Born on 18 July 1839, James Surtees Phillpotts was a British teacher, headmaster, and author best known for his many years at Bedford School. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he earned high honors in classical studies, and he later built a reputation as a gifted schoolmaster with strong views on education.

Phillpotts joined Bedford School in the 1860s and eventually became its headmaster, serving for decades. He is remembered as a reforming figure who expanded the school and encouraged a broader, more modern approach to learning. Alongside his school work, he wrote and edited educational books, especially in the field of classics, helping students engage with Greek and Latin literature.

He also translated works from the classical world and remained intellectually active into old age. Phillpotts died on 16 October 1930, leaving behind a legacy as both an energetic educator and a writer who believed serious learning should be lively and accessible.
