About the author

Born in Reading in 1843, John South Shedlock built his reputation as an English teacher, pianist, and musical critic. He is remembered today chiefly for writing accessible books on major composers and musical forms, including Beethoven and The Pianoforte Sonata.

Shedlock was also a significant figure in music journalism. Records for The Monthly Musical Record describe him as the journal's editor from the early 1880s until 1912, the longest editorial tenure in its history. That long run suggests how trusted he was as a guide to concert life, musical scholarship, and debate in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain.

His work shows a strong interest in explaining serious music clearly for general readers. He also contributed to editorial and reference projects connected with the wider world of classical music publishing, helping preserve and interpret music history for future audiences. He died in 1919.
