About the author

Born in Reading in 1843, John South Shedlock became known as an English teacher, pianist, and musical critic. He wrote on major composers and musical form at a time when music history and criticism were becoming more widely read outside specialist circles.

He is especially associated with books such as The Pianoforte Sonata: Its Origin and Development and with studies and editions connected to Beethoven, including Beethoven's Letters. A modern Beethoven research site describes him as a pioneering scholar of Beethoven's sketches, which helps explain why his name still appears in discussions of early music scholarship and Beethoven studies.

Shedlock died in 1919. Though not a household name today, he remains of interest to readers who enjoy older music criticism, Beethoven scholarship, and the history of piano literature.
